The stag's name was 'Paul' and he was on the cover of the CZN one time I remember. First animals in the zoo for me as in the (good?) old days I used to park in that road and use that small entrance to the zoo. I never used the main entrance until much more recently.
For many years the wapiti were in the zoo's 'shop window' as you could see through the fence at the end of their paddock as you walked up to the zoo's old entrance. The animals in the photo are standing roughly where the off-show parakeet and lorikeet aviaries are now. Behind the fence and the hedge is Caughall Road, with the houses on the other side.
Scanned from a Kodachrome transparency.
@Pertinax Your cheque is in the post @birdsandbats The main factors for the quality of the image are the new Olympus camera and Vivitar lens that I bought in 1976 and the amazing chemistry of Kodachrome film (largely due to the work of Mannes and Godowsky in the 1930s - they were actually professional musicians and amateur photographers until their experiments impressed Kodak so much that they had to be hired). I have been doing quite a lot of scanning recently, because my old Ektachrome and Agfachrome slides and Kodacolor negatives are showing signs of age - but the Kodachromes are still looking good.
