Great photo! According to Zootierliste, this species is only found in Antwerp, Berlin, Leipzig, Doue la Fontaine, Palmyre, Mulhouse and Bojnice in all of Europe but are there some smaller, non-EAZA zoos with the species? I hope to visit Antwerp next summer and seeing this species will be one of the many highlights of the trip.
@snowleopard Zootierliste is not just for EAZA zoos, so I guess no other zoos keep this species. Artis kept this species untill some years ago, first in the Ape House and in the last years (after the renovation and transformation of the Ape House) one individual was kept in the central enclosure of the Small Mammal House.
I cannot confirm whether Zootierliste lists all zoological facilities open to the public in Europe, but if it doesn't it certainly has information on the great majority of them, including the non-EAZA accredited facilities (places like the Olmense Zoo, for example, or De Zonnegloed Sanctuary which I visited recently). Zootierliste of course does not list private collections and unless one of those has access to a species like this you can safely assume the places you named are the only places in Europe where you can see this species. That said, the information on Zootierliste isn't always entirely correct or up-to-date, but it still the best public source we have I would say.
That said, Zoo Antwerpen certainly has its fair share of rarities in zoological collections (and in some cases, worldwide, including wild populations). The bird house, for example also has some rare species living within its walls and aviary meshes, and so do the aquarium and the reptile house. For people who like to see uncommon species it is an attractive zoo to visit.
Next to rarities in the bird house, aquarium and reptile house, Antwerpen also has some small mammals that aren't common in zoos, like bush hyrax (although off show at my last visit), rufous elephant shrew, slender loris, Balabac mousedeer and springhare. Furthermore, it's the only zoo in the world with an eastern lowland gorilla.
The bush hyrax I cannot remember ever having seen myself on exhibit. The exhibit I guess was once perhaps planned to hold it now holds gundis. That said, there are indeed some unusual species of small mammals to been seen in the vivariums in the Ape House and in the Nocturama (nocturnal animal house). Yes, for zoo enthusiasts like us Antwerp Zoo certainly has plenty to offer in terms of species. Add to that all the recent projects to improve the quality of the enclosures and animal welfare.
That said, at this moment it is not yet clear/publicly known whether there will or will not be any large construction sides to continue the improvement of the zoo. This year, in the 175th anniversary jubilee year, they didn't want any construction sites (apart from the reconstruction of the old bird of prey aviaries, which is a largely non-disturbing construction site). Maybe they will be starting renovation and construction again next year, but there haven't been any press releases on that yet.
@snowleopard I very much doubt there are any others. This species has seen a decline in numbers and as a result, of holders too. In the 1990's there were five zoos in the UK with them, now there are none, as the last ones were sent to join other European groups. So enjoy them in Antwerp- probably my favourite old world Monkey species.
