From this picture this doesn't actually look bad at all to me. Sure a bit small and old, but it has lots of foliage, shade structures and a pool, not at all inhumane. And I actually appreciate the weathered aesthetic, does it extend a bit further to the right?
A bit, but not that much I think. There are three of these pits arranged sort of like petals. I think the real issue is the size, it is definitely too small by modern standards. Also, in China, you have to consider visitor feeding; a good bear facility must something to prevent this.
You are right to draw attention to the positives here though; again they tell a story of a zoo working within its limits to improve things.
@FunkyGibbon Er, I just zoomed in and noticed that that is a lion in the shade on the left, not a brown bear. Which makes me now terrified at how low those walls are
PS: I hope you dont mind me commenting on a ton of your pics of Chinese zoos, I just discovered the pictures from your recent trip and I find them very interesting.
@DelacoursLangur It is a bear not a lion
I don't mind at all, even though I might not be able to reply to all of them. In fact I welcome the interest! Actually these specific photos are from last July, and then previous uploads stretch further back. I didn't put dates on because I thought that information was included with the file when uploaded and I have only just discovered that not to be the case.
@DelacoursLangur You are absolutely right! I consulted the map and the lions are directly adjacent to the bears, so that's partially how I got confused.
I don't remember being worried about the walls at the time, I suspect it's at least partially a photographic effect.
