This really is pretty antediluvian (depressingly so, given that as a relatively new zoo it isn't hosting ancient monuments that have the excuse of having existed for decades and decades: this is actually a relatively new exhibit!). I think there are four chimps on display here - one of which looked to be relatively young.
The fact that Olmen has pretty much the only pure-blooded, occasionally breeding group of Eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in Europe honestly makes this awful exhibit even more disturbing and disgraceful.
I first visited the Olmense Zoo as a child in the late 1990's and at the time the chimpanzees were kept in an awfully tiny cage that was far worse than even this nasty exhibit. I believe this one was built in 2000 and one has to wonder why they couldn't have done better at the time.
Hopefully a new chimpanzee exhibit is a priority for the improvement of this zoo in the coming years.
On another note: the male chimpanzee at Olmen likes to throw nasty stuff like grass, mud and even fecal matter at the visitors, so better not to provoke him.
