Bird House - Marabou Stork all-indoor aviary

July 27th, 2019
...where once, many years ago, I saw my first Shoebill - and my memory may be playing tricks on me, but I seem to remember that the barrier was only waist-high. The Shoebills had access to an outdoor area, at the front of the Bird House - is that not still available, for the Marabous?

@sooty mangabey
This exhibit, back in 1980, was where I saw my first shoebill too.
I'm sure you're correct; on my first few visits to Frankfurt the glass barrier was much lower.

@lintworm I appreciate all of your insight into these German zoos. I was positive that there was zero outside access for the Marabou Storks and you back that up, and it is probably a unique situation as I cannot think of another zoo with the same setup.

Just like Sooty Mangabey and Tim May, I saw here my first shoebill, somewhere around 1993. This Birdhouse had in those days a pretty remarkable collection.
