Giant Eland

little red brocket (Mazama rufina)

This photo wasn't easy to get! The exhibit has a wooden fence along the footpath and another wire fence for the animal. This resulted in limited opportunities for photographs without fencing. Things weren't looking great, when I got an idea! There was a rock wall bordering the left side of the exhibit. A climb to the top would give me a perfect view of the exhibit below. Under the supervision of zoo staff I scaled this rocky obstacle, leading to the much more satisfying results seen above.

Didn't we discuss this species some time ago? Nice that you have seen it now!

We did! At the time I believe you had the only photos of the species on the site so I was trying to track down how I could get down to San Martin from Quito.

Bioparque Amaru in Cuenca keeps the species as well. The zoo got a female some months after I visited.
