How is this species doing in the wild ( if I remember right it should be very rare ) and howmany are kept at Alice Spring ? Is this species ever bred in captivity ?

The species is widespread, occurring in every state or territory except Tasmania and the ACT. From a listing of terrestrial vertebrates in Australia published by the CSIRO a few years ago, the species is considered Endangered in NSW and Vulnerable in Victoria, but note that the species' range in these states is very small. In South Australia they are listed as Threatened and in the Northern Territory as Near Threatened.

Luckily they prefer relatively inhospitable country which has no doubt been to their benefit.

As for breeding, I know Serendip Sanctuary has bred them and I'm sure other places, but I can't think of any at the moment except maybe Western Plains Zoo.

As for the Desert Park, I only saw the one in the exhibit.

Then there probably is at least two. The second may have been around the corner and out of view when I was there.
