This exhibit was another surprise to me, as the Berlin Tierpark is so large that some prominent exhibits don't even make it onto the map. Once I saw the manatee pool then my memory was jogged, but coming around a corner inside the Pachyderm House and seeing this pool was initially a bit of a shock. For a long time I thought that the pool was devoid of inhabitants, but I eventually did see one manatee and my best guess is that there only is the one animal left. The pool is much larger than it first appears and definitely adequate to still hold manatees, although this entire building is going to be overhauled in the next few years. I am curious to find out if manatees still have a home at the Tierpark in the future.
Given that there have been quite a few manatee births in European zoos this year I think they still have a future around here, even if perhaps some institutions have to take them out of their collection.
@Cat-Man I wasn't referring to any specific institutions, just to the suggestion by Snowleopard that the manatees might not be part of a future overhaul of the building.
As far as births go, there have been births at Burgers', Odense and Wroclaw.
The manatee pool is not as big as it appears and it is too small for the two individuals it keeps. The manatees should move to Spain soon and I do not think they will come back anytime soon. The pachyderm house will have an African theme.
