Swimming wild Brown or Norwegian rat (Rattus norvegicus) in the walk-through aviary, 2019-08-04

Unfortunately I saw at least four of these walking or swimming around in the large walk-through aviary. From what I've learned usually when you see brown rats at all during daylight hours, there is really a lot of them around and you've got major issues. There were rats in the tropical hall also.
@sooty mangabey I agree as I find rats to be very unpleasant and undesirable creatures. I guess a zoo will always have some around but it seemed really bad at Olmen during my most recent visit.

I did see a single rat trap in the tropical house, so at least I assume they are at least trying to do something about this issue. It isn't however easy to control rat populations...
 
Yeah, most zoos always seem to have some... and indeed very hard to get rid of when you have to avoid hurting other animals... the black and brown rats are two of my very least favorite animals honestly.
