Giant Eland

pygmy killer whale (Feresa attenuata)

This young male was rescued off Cat Island, Mississippi in early September and brought to the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, MS.
I am forever grateful to @devilfish for the heads up about this animal! I booked my flight the next day and even saw some Swamp Rabbit while in the region. Such an amazing experience especially after I missed out on seeing the species by not going to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Japan.

Additionally can a Moderator move this series of photos to the proper gallery after it's created? I'll be leaving the country in a few days and couldn't wait any more haha.

@Giant Eland I already visited, although I was not aware at the time; Ocean Adventures is the same facility as IMMS, or at least the zoological component to it. I never knew this species was kept in captivity at the time of my visit, especially so recently, and now I am trying to figure out if I passed by its holding when I was walking the grounds, although I dont think I did as I dont recall a covered pool. Either way Im guessing this was a very temporarily held rescue that has long since been released or passed away.

@Chlidonias has it exactly right, so you didn't miss it.

Was a sad story because the facility has a history rescuing and successfully releasing Pygmy Killer Whales in the past. Of course they were hoping for similar luck with this individual, but it wasn't meant to be.
