Barred buttonquail, male

Bird House, ZOO Antwerpen, 25th October 2019
Turnix suscitator
I don't think I had ever seen a buttonquail before in all my zoo visiting, and I hadn't expected the birds to be so small and so active.
Buttonquails are unusual because the females are larger and more brightly coloured than males. They lay their eggs and leave the males to incubate them and tend the chicks, while they look for another mate. I think that phalaropes and the dotterel do the same thing.
