Metro Richmond - young Diana Monkeys trying to figure out my camera

He can't figure out the camera because it's an ancient film camera and he is wondering where the LCD screen is! :p

Seriously, though, that's a great and clever photo and I also love the retro neck strap. I started in photography with the Pentax K1000 as did a lot of people from my generation. There is a reason for that. If I am not mistaken it is the best selling camera model of all time and had something like a twenty year production run.

:D:D These two, especially the larger one, were extremely curious about my things! I also got some videos of them looking at my phone using the selfie camera. The adults couldn't be bothered.
I LOVE my K1000s. This one I found on craigslist! $60 for the camera (and strap), extra lenses, stuff to do macro, leather holders and case. My dogs have unfortunately gotten to most of the leather. I've been experimenting with the macro bits on reptiles in zoos, but haven't gotten any developed yet (major backlog of 30+ rolls from this year to be developed). I took both cameras to Richmond with me, with a telephoto lens on one, which I hadn't used in over a decade. Due to their enclosures I ended up using that one more than the regular lens.
A few months ago I ran into someone else using a K1000, in the Amazonia building at Smithsonian. They weren't nearly as excited as I was, sadly.

Here's a fun fact: the K1000 shutter is fully mechanical. The small button cell battery only runs the simple light meter (the needle on the right in the viewfinder that goes up and down for proper exposure). The camera itself will work without the battery, so if you know how to judge exposure in your mind (Sunny f16 Rule) you can use it without a battery!

@Arizona Docent And I have one of those manual light meters should that happen, as well :) I'm so used to the K1000, basically any other camera has too many buttons for me and I get confused, LOL. I was given a Minolta X-570 and I've yet to use it. I need to take it along with me to a zoo and shoot the same photos with each camera, so I can see how it compares.
