I was in contact with the curator at the time. He said they had four and all were black. One pair were on exhibit and this is one of the pair. The other pair were off exhibit for breeding, but no kittens ever resulted. At some time prior to my visit they must have had a non-melanistic cat because the sign showed a picture of it and it was obviously taken in the same exhibit. It had a more or less solid coat with black legs (I think this is the Brazilian type under the new split?).

@Arizona Docent Yes I am inclined to agree with you. To me with it's smaller head and longish pelt hairs it looks to be more like the Brazilian type.
