Does anyone know about the current genetic health of the subspecies. My recollection is that it has a tiny founding base including some impure individuals. Does the chinese equivalent of the AZA manage a studbook system, are they planning to reintroduce them to prevent unchecked genetic drift?
 
@FunkyGibbon Er, yeah thats generally the idea of reintroduction haha, a species dies when it ceases to be able to survive in its environment. The longer separated from its environment, the higher the risk of adaptation to captivity...
 
@DelacoursLangur There is no wild left I'm afraid (This is a slight exaggeration, but I do not anticipate that we will see genuine introductions in our lifetimes) ((From what I can gather the Save China's Tigers project merely plan to introduce them into fenced reserves))
