Juvenile Little Pied Shag (Phalacrocorax melanoleucos)

In the New Zealand subspecies brevirostris the plumage of the juveniles is entirely black, unlike in other subspecies where the juveniles are pied. In the adult plumage, New Zealand birds can be either pied as "normal" (black above, white below) or can be "white-throated" where only the cheeks and throat are white.
