montane southwest fence lizard

April 18, 2020, Mount Lemmon, Arizona.
I had to look this up when I got home, and thanks to the website of Tucson Herpetological Society, I discovered there is a bit of a taxonomic debate on this. (Since some of you enjoy these discussions I will detail it here). The two possibilities are plateau fence lizard (Sceloporus tristrichus) and Southwestern fence lizard (Sceloporus cowlesi). They note that those in the Santa Catalina mountains (where this was taken) and neighboring mountain ranges are sometimes called plateau, and based on the photos I saw online they look a bit more like that to me. However the few studies indicate the range of plateau ends farther north at the Gila River. Southwestern from the lowlands look a bit different (more distinctly patterned to me) and the site goes on to state "Bezy and Cole ...noted there may very well be cryptic montane and lowland forms that need to be teased apart". Not sure if "teased apart" means split into full species or subspecies, but there you have it.
