Uta Hick's Bearded Saki at Mulhouse 29/08/09

Chiropotes utahickae

The only one in Europe (certainly on public display). One of the rare species named after a zoo person - Uta Hick was director of Cologne Zoo. This single female (the Saki, not Ms Hick!) was originally one of a pair from a confiscated import. The male did not survive long but the female is still going strong. At the time of our visit it was temporarily being housed alone as the Golden-headed Lion Tamarins had suddenly taken exception to it - after a week or two to recuperate it is planned to mix her with the Geoffroy's Marmosets.

What other animals are named after zoo people?

I know Steve Irwin has a turtle named after him. :)

Off the top of my head, I know there's a fish named after Gordon McGregor Reid (director at Chester).

There's a subspecies of gecko - Nactus serpensinsula durrelli - named after Gerald Durrell.

Thanks Mike - had a feeling this discussion would be one for yourself! :)

He has two African fish named after him: Labeo reidi and Nannocharax reidi.
Gerald and Lee Durrell also have a species of glass frog named after them = Centrolene durrellorum

Ah - that's right - was the Nannocharax I was thinking of.

Indeed - Avahi cleesei.

Well, I guess we can count John Cleese as a honorary 'zoo person'.
Dr Lee G Simmons, former Director of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo, has a lemur named after him: Simmons’ Mouse-Lemur, Microcebus simmonsi.
