Nyala usually don't get along with other animals too well. Here in Iowa our okapi at the Blank Park Zoo had to be put down due to a incident with a male nyala.
@MonkeyBat I am sorry to hear this. Will the fact that Nyala don't do well in mixed exhibits be used as an excuse for the AZA Antelope and Giraffe TAG to phase them out in the future if they plan to?
@UngulateNerd92 I don't think many zoos mix them in Savannah exhibits anymore, but apparently they do pretty well with hornbills, and mixes with giraffes and rhinos have worked in New Zealand (Auckland with rhinos and Wellington with giraffes, although I'm not sure if males are mixed in with giraffes)
Nyala don't seem to be any more prone to aggression according to the AZA mixed-species manual. A bunch of zoos still mix them. The issue seems to be having breeding bull nyala mixed with other male antelope.
The manual lists the Nyala as having been sent away from this exhibit as they were flighty from the curious zebra. Its not that large an exhibit, so I imagine the fear was they would run into a fence or wall. A second issue was limited barn space when the zoo wanted to breed the zebra. Personally, this issue seems like a major failure by the zoo having recently opened the exhibit, yet not having space to breed the species when breeding recommendations were given.
@nczoofan True that they can be skittish. One ran into a fence in Wellington Zoo after being spooked by some fireworks. The animal unfortunately did not survive.
