@alexkant, on what basis now assigned to O. aries and subspecies urmiana?
I stumbled upon assignments by Nasonov (1911) in an article in the Zoologischer Anzeiger from 1912 that put the Iran / Persian wild sheep into 3 groups: Ovis orientalis, Ovis urmania and Ovis vignei.
Admittedly, all wild sheep were dealt with in this article including O. ammon, O. hodgsoni, O. musimon, O. poli and O. nivicola. At the time, assignment to groupings along DNA genetics as well as cladistics was not a subject ..., so there is a good deal of other forms described now assigned to one of the major wild sheep genus.
