One of the enclosures for spectacled bear in Givskud Zoo, built last year. The park has several large enclosures for the species, but when I visited in June last year only this enclosure was finished. Everything was completed and inaugurated in August last year when the park celebrated 50 years. Four bears live in the park; two brothers and a breeding pair. According to the park, the whole complex is large enough to house up to ten bears and there are plans to have more bears in the future. At the place where this enclosure is there was eralier an enclosure for water buffalo, nilgais and blackbucks but they have been moved to other places in the park.
The zoo has advertised that their spectacled bear complex is the largest of its kind anywhere in Europe, which is hugely impressive. Are the bears mixed with the nearby coatis?
No, the coatis have their own quite small and old enclosure. A few years they stopped breeding coatis since it's not allowed because the species is invasive. The plan is to phase out the species since it will be forbidden to have it in European zoos when the current generation is dead
