What a wonderful surprise! I discovered this zoo while looking at googlemaps during a day of wine-tasting. I tried calling ahead of time to ask what mammal species they had. Person on the phone started listing birds and I said "Oh no- just the mammals," to which she responded "All birds ARE mammals, sir!" I'm sure she meant animals, but my chances of anything exciting wasn't looking great so far.
It wasn't very far out of the way so I decided to give it a whirl anyways. They were barely still opened but were nice enough to let me in. As I paid admission I took a shot in the dark and tried asking "you don't happen to have Grysbok do you?" Person hadn't heard of that, and I described it as a small antelope. "We have a few small antelope here!" Staff brought me over to this gem! I couldn't believe it! It was as if I had manifested it's presence!
To be fair I had seen my first Cape Grysbok in the wild in the dark a few nights earlier, but this was a far better photo opportunity! Still this was probably my favorite captive surprise of the trip- I just love the look of their heathered fur.
