Milwaukee is such an immensely frustrating zoo. New exhibits in the past few years for bonobos, elephants and hippos will all be outdated and obsolete in the near future. It's amazing to see other zoos open world-class habitats for those species, while Milwaukee has minimal upgrades that cost millions of squandered dollars.
@snowleopard The most frustrating thing is that the Zoo had the ability to utilize the former Impala Country exhibit as more landspace for the hippos (transferring either Happy or Patti to another zoo to breed) and they went with the typical riverbank habitat with a design geared more towards guests rather than the animals. They could have easily emulated a riverine environment in terms of foliage (reeds, bushes, dense canebrakes) and even implemented a mixed-species opportunity with guineafowl and sitatunga, carrying forward the Zoo's initial legacy of innovation (started with the predator/prey exhibits). As is it's an improvement but if the zoo stops at this, Happy and Patti can barely tell the difference between their old home and their new home.
