I know of 2 pairs of brown hyenas, a pair here at Leon zoo and another at Chapultepec zoo in Mexico City. The y were born at the Zoológico Nacional de Cuba in Havana from animals imported from Namibia in 2012
I didn't expect Mexico to have two zoos with brown hyenas! That's really good. I hope if they end up having offsprings the populations in Europe get new blood and young individuals.
@Onychorhynchus coronatus Welp, that depends. Europe has some brown hyenas in private hands, and if breeding them in Mexico becomes successful enough, other places around the world would be able to get some, with Mexico becoming the main breeding country. Moving out, getting more specimens to Mexico and getting new blood is always good for a species as rare as brown hyenas, and as far as I know, there is a breeding population in a private collection in England (The Leopard and Goat farm to be precise), as well as some old individuals in the Praha zoo.
