Proboscis monkey Jeff (Nasalis larvatus), 2015-08-01

I visited Apenheul back in 2015 specially to see this very particular species - for the first and probably only time I'll ever see a living specimen. Given that this species is very difficult to keep under human care, has a highly specialized diet and never did well in and was never maintained truly long-time or became an established species in any Western zoo, and that only the Singapore Zoo seems to be truly successful with this species, it seems to me very unlikely that any Western zoo will try to keep them again in the future. Apenheul gave up in 2015 after several of the males from Singapore they kept passed away untimely from different diseases. Nonetheless a fascinating and unique species I am glad to have seen, if only once.

On a different note: tonight I posted a small selection of old 'goodies'. I plan to post more old stuff in the future, although such postings will likely be irregular. In the near future I also plan to process pictures I took at the Belgian Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels in December of 2019 and a series from Zoo Antwerpen from June of 2019 that I somehow forgot to process beyond the very start and only posted two images from. I am hoping to be doing a new zoo visit in the first weeks of March. Hopefully I will be getting some decent weather on days I don't have to work pretty soon.

@KevinB the Yokohama Zoorasia is able to breed proboscis monkeys four times as of 2019. However they have 5 as of May 2019 and I myself haven’t been able to find out what had happens to animals that get too old to stay with the troop or how many of the founder animals is still alive.
