Skull anatomy of European Mole (Talpa europaea) - mandible shot 1

Some assorted images from a skull I have been slowly processing for the past few years - the cleaning process is yet to complete.
I did something like this in when I was about 9 and was out walking in Yorkshire. There was a sheep skull just lying there about 10 metres off the path so I picked it up and cleaned it pretty thoroughly for about 2 hours in a sink, then again the next week until it was almost spotless. I used it for a few drawings but then got tired of it so I donated it to the art department at my school.

Why would the sheep skull just be lying there though?
