@Arizona Docent I think that just like their introduction to the Caribbean islands the mongoose was an intentional release to "control rat populations".

Rats were negatively impacting sugarcane which was an important crop for the economy so the concern was on the loss of profits.

Just like the Caribbean this introduction negatively impacted native biodiversity severely and in fact it almost caused the extinction of the native goose species the nene.
