Hawkfinch

June 14 2013 Fresendelf - Schleswig Holstein
Hawfinch in English - but a good tick as they are hard to see (I've never seen one :()

Alan

Saw one last week in the New Forest.;) 'Tsick', 'Tsick' the metallic call is unmistakeable once you are familiar with it. But being a canopy-dweller mostly, they are a very 'hit and miss' species and its usually very much chance if you see one.

But in winter there are places where numbers regularly fly in from surrounding areas to roost. One is Boldrewood Arboretum in the New Forest, where they visit in double figures. They arrive in the last hour before dusk and sit on the tops of tall conifer trees before flying into the shelter of the branches. Easy to see then.:)

Sorry for the extra 'k' ! I'm having a week vacation and the haw ( without K ! ) finch was just hopping along the window of the house I'm staying in, so hadn't any difficulties to spot it :)
