underwater tapir viewing (former capybara)

August 31, 2020
As my title says, this was originally (for about two decades) a capybara exhibit (with crested screamers mixed in). It was the only underwater capybara viewing I have seen. The original tapir exhibit is the left of this, with a gate that connects the two. Though the gate can be opened or closed, it was never open when the capybaras were there. Now that the capybaras have been moved to the exhibit to the right, the tapir has access to either yard. As you can see there is no filtration system and in all my years the only time I got a clear view of capybaras underwater was when I was there while a keeper had emptied and cleaned the pool and then refilled it and they went in.
