Coba Lake, 25-07-2019. Not the best picture but the bird was hiding in a reed bed far away. A really cool species. I also saw least grebes but getting a picture of them was even harder.
You say it's not the best picture, but I think it's quite nice. The reeds add a nice element and you also have the head of the grebe in focus, which is difficult to do when you are photographing through reeds.
Thanks. I'm quite happy with the results considering the difficulty of photographic a species that not only likes to hide in the reeds, but disappears under water every few seconds and then pops up meters from its original location.
@ralph I'm not sure about other grebes but here in Australia the Australasian little grebe and the Hoary Headed Grebe (both are much smaller) behave the same way.
I have the same 'issue' with little grebes here in my home country, the Netherlands. I must have seen that species over 40 times, but only got a handful of decent photo's of it. The least grebes in Coba were a disaster as well. They were too small and too far away, and always diving.
Great crested grebes are easier. Not only because of size, but they also seem to dive much less often.
Black-necked grebe have proved to be a challenge too. Of all the times I saw them, only once was I able to get some sort of decent photo's.
I saw horned grebe just once, but I got good views of it. Pics didn't turn out the way I hoped but it turned out my camera lens was having techinal issues. Such a bummer. Camera died few days later.
