This is a perfect example of how some zoos in the U.S. are funded. Locals vote on whether or not to support a zoo's expansion via tax dollars, which is an intriguing way to raise funds that is unheard of in many other nations.
Giraffes will anchor the next phase of Africa. The November levy needs to pass for this to happen. Primates have also been mentioned as a potential addition.
Akron’s first levy was in 2000. This is the 4th. They have passed with a decent percentage of the vote. Akron would not have the zoo they have now without the levies. The zoo pre-levies was a lot different. I included the levy website.
Not sure. Details have been generic at this time. They know the zoo needs more primates. When I hear more details I will post it in the zoo’s news thread.
It passed. An African expansion is in the works. Giraffes will be the anchor. The new area will likely be around 14 acres and cost $21 million. Likely for 2027 or 2028. The zoo is getting a new hospital as well for 2025.
