Meerkat enclosure from above

This enclosure is part of the Kalahari exhibit, opened in 2011. The meerkats previously had acces to a bigger enclosure, shared with lions and yellow mongooses. After a lion killed a mongoose, this co-housing stopped. The mongooses now inhabit another enclosure, not in the Kalahari exhibit.

Kitsch / meerkat / cringe overdose ...

Interesting and disturbing to learn that these animals were once mixed with lions, whoever came up with that management decision must have been a genius  o_O

@Onychorhynchus coronatus The kitschy decorations were there for one of the China Lights nocturnal autumn/winter events at the zoo, so luckily they are not there permanently. Side note: I'm not a fan of those events nor of these structures at all. Normally the exhibit is surrounded only by mock rock and vegetation. And I think it is actually a pretty decent meerkat exhibit.

With regards to the mixing of mongoose with lions, I agree that was really not a good idea. Unfortunately even well-established, well-respected zoos like Antwerp sometimes make poor animal management decisions. Of course we as zoo enthusiasts have to criticize such poor decisions, but we shouldn't immediately write off zoos making them as bad places for animals.
