Indianapolis Zoo - Old Bear Exhibit

July 2008. Grizzly bears used to be held in here, but now it simply sits empty.

Good to hear that they don't have any bears living here anymore. I wonder what are they going to use this for.

@DavidBrown It's been almost a full 13 years since I took this photo and there are still brown bears in the exhibit. This enclosure is far too small and doesn't look too different from 1920s-era grottoes. Indianapolis Zoo would do well to overhaul the entire 'Forests' zone of the zoo into a cohesive set of exhibits, or at the very least pile some natural substrate on the 1980s cement for the bears.

Got this as my random image, visited this zoo last year and the bears are still in this same enclosure with no updates. Super sad to see no improvements and it still being a basic bear pit :(

I see some improvements from that 2008 photo. There are some natural substrate pits (in which I think the keepers hide food?) and some new logs and/or rocks. Didn't take the closest look yesterday when I went, but it is slightly different.

Definitely agree it could be better. The bears usually seem very inactive and (dare I say?) bored.
