Facial markings and coat colour give it away. It is red deer Cervus elaphus.
Would be nice to know how Zoo do Rio got hold of red deer and from what source (are they from locally released deer like you get in Chili and Argentina?)???

In Brazil its easy to get Red Deer with the stock imported several years ago from Europe and even USA to Zoos and Breeding Centers.

They are very common in all Brazilian Zoos that are not specialized in native fauna.

We dont have released exotic deer in Brazil.

I those days you can buy several species of exotic deer(Red, Rusa, Fallow,Axis),elands, cervicapras, waterbuck, aoudad, dromedarys, camels, etc from several commercial breeding centers in Brazil. You dont have to be registred like a breeder or zoo, its only a question in how much money you want to expend in this.

I can't quite say why, but I'm not convinced it's a Red Deer. No pale rump patch; couldn't be a hybrid, could it?

I would say that is not a red deer.

Rump patch, colour and antlers are wrong.

I had a look at the other picture of red deer as well, and possibly they are a strain which look different to what I have seen. They are possably just an odd looking strain of red deer.

Fellas, I did have a real hard look at the picture, time and time again. First, I compared the photo to locally native species. Both marsh deer and pampas deer are out of the question. The huemul and its relative also do not come into the equation.

No N.A. wapiti, no Central Asian deer or maral type. For a red deer I did feel and agree that the antlers looked a bit curious, but given the white on the face and eye patch I decided on red deer. That said, sambar may be in the equation too ..., but cervo nobre signifies red deer.

eduardo, if they are bred locally then I would have thought that accidental releases do pose a danger (the invasive species issue). I know the hunting variety introduced red deer to Argentina and Chili and virtually destroyed - LITERALLY - the native and highly specialised huemul deer.
I suppose that is also not too uncommon a phenomenon and quite well known to our Kiwi listeners.

Hi!

Yes it could be a hybrid! In a strange way several zoos in Brazil keep several deer species in a "mixed" species exhibit.

KB.

Well there could be 1 or 2 escapes from the zoos and breeding centers, but its not common, the law regarding enclosures and escaping management its very strong in Brazil. So this dont play a big role right now and in other way in Brazil this hunting ranches that made the problem in Argentina and Chile are not allowed in Brazil. But we have several km of border with Argentina and it could happend that some feral deer enters in Brazil, like now the Feral Wild Boar from Argentina and Uruguay is doing, its a problem in some areas in Brazil, some individuals where found over 2000 km from the border with Argentina near the Amazon Basin in Mato Grosso.

I believe the deer in the picture is a male Javan rusa, as it's the only species of exotic deer the Rio de Janeiro zoo still holds (they had fallow and red deer in the past, but not anymore).
