It's not that common, usually in the country or at night on roadsides. I usually see one a year birding - and they will usually bolt at the first sign of people, even when I'm 100 metres away and on the other side of a river. This one was bold enough to approach people looking for food. I suspect someone has been feeding it.
@Hix The ones I get over here in London are really quite bold and don't tend to scare too easily. Interesting that the behaviour is so different in the same species.
