Sewerby Zoo, Capuchins having caught Grey Squirrel 27th July 2012

Not a great photo as the camera has focused on the mesh, but I thought it was interesting enough to post - lots of visitors seemed interested in what was going on and one asked if the squirrel had been fed to the monkeys by the keepers.

Very interesting picture. I never thought that capuchins can caught so big animal.

Thank-you. Sewerby's catch plenty of Grey Squirrels. If I had not got six months behind posting photos of Sewerby (with the exception of one recent one) there would have been another similar one by now.

As wild Grey squirrels don't overlap with Monkeys anywhere, they obviously don't recognise them as predators so here in their 'adopted home' they will repeatedly enter the enclosure and get nobbled.

I've seen Grey Squirrels in Gorilla enclosures at both Howletts and Chessington but the Gorillas aren't interested in them. At Howletts one time there was one trapped in an enrichment feeder (it finally got out) but even that elicited no interest.

I imagine they had quite a struggle to overpower it, and Squirrels can give a powerful bite too.
