juvenile North Island Saddleback (Philesturnus carunculatus rufusater)

February 2021, on Tiritiri Matangi Island
North Island Saddleback tend to be split as a distinct species nowadays (i.e. P. rufusater). This one is a juvenile bird as can be told by the undeveloped wattles. In the South Island Saddleback the juveniles are completely brown whereas in North Island Saddleback the juveniles have normal adult plumage.
