The Lion King is also a perfect microcosm of roles given to British actors in American films - either conniving baddies (Scar) or bumbling fools (Zazu).

This doesn't have anything to do with this, but I heard Zazu was a red-billed hornbill... He looks more like a big-billed toucan or some imaginary bird with all of those blue feathers and that small body. Any idea of what real-world bird he most resembles? Because I wouldn't have guessed red-billed hornbill.

He is based on a Tockus hornbill (and as I recall the film's dialogue confirms he is a hornbill). Wikipedia (brilliantly) says he's a Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill - which matches the bill alright but the simple fact is no Tockus are blue!
