Zoos need to stop naming their animals after movie characters, I'm not naming my kid iron man, now am I?

@Mr Gharial I don’t feel that’s an entirely appropriate comparison. In my understanding, ‘simba’ is a genuine Swahili word entirely independent of the movie character, whereas ‘Iron Man’ is a descriptive nickname that is hard to apply elsewhere. Secondarily, animal names don’t have the same personal significance to the bearer - a child named after a particular character may have negative feelings about the name, to a lion I’d say it wouldn’t matter. That said, I agree that ‘Simba’ is a bit of a poor name simply because it is overused for both fictional and real lions.

@Junklekitteb That's fair, but the amount of elephants named Dumbo, the ring tailed lemurs named Julian and lions named Simba, Scar and Alex is rediculous

@Mr Gharial - but lots of parents do name their babies after movie or tv characters which are popular at the time of birth.

@Chlidonias Yeah, but those parents are stupid

I heard a woman call her daughter, her daughter was named Tinkerbell. I felt very bad for her daughter
