margay on the move

Summer Saturday Nights, 2007, when they still had a margay in Small Cat Canyon. Sadly, these cats have been phased out in the AZA and in fact are about to disappear from America altogether. According to the latest issue of the Feline Conservation Federation Journal, there are likely only five margays left in the entire country.
The name Arizona-Sonora Desert Musuem derives from the fact that they interpret the entire Sonoran Desert which falls mainly in the states of Arizona (USA) and Sonora (Mexico). So it is not strictly animals native to Arizona, but those found anywhere in the Sonoran Desert. Though it's still a stretch, apparently margays ranged just barely into the southern tip of this region (in Mexico).

BTW I believe the USA population is now down to two very elderly animals in southern California: one at Santa Ana Zoo and one at EFBC Feline Conservation Center.
