Faith was born at Auckland Zoo and produced 14 calves during her time, including two sets of twins. Her death ended Auckland Zoo’s 94 year association with hippos. Faith was also the last Common hippopotamus held in New Zealand.
@steveroberts Faith was indeed a special hippo. She was quite ferocious (compared to other females like Snorkel), which made her an excellent mother. Faith was the first female to successfully raise a calf in the new hippopotamus exhibit. The exhibit had no capacity to seperate off mothers and calves, so the survival of her calf was attributed solely to Faith’s success in defending it against the other adults.
