The rather-lost and much-loved young male nicknamed 'Wally' that has been a resident around the lifeboat station for a number of weeks now. He spent most of today putting on a rather distant but consistent show just offshore.

@Maguari I was going to ask if this was the young male that first appeared in Ireland last month :) Is he still eating and behaving normally, despite his odd location?

@TinoPup Yep, it's the same one! As far as I know he's not giving any specific concerns, other than being massively lost, but as I mentioned in the Big Year thread, it's been noticed that he's hauling out less and feeding more the last few days - possibly a prelude to another relocation.

@Maguari I'll have to look at the thread for your updates :) As awesome as he is to see, I think everyone will be happy when he heads back to more walrus-friendly areas. Has anyone put a tag on him to track?

@TinoPup Not that I'm aware of - he's been closely monitored but it's all very hands-off. Hopefully for his sake when he does move it will be northwards - but he didn't do a great job of that when he left Ireland so we'll have to see..!

After leaving Tenby, Wally was observed off Padstow in Cornwall, before appearing on the coast of France near La Rochelle and eventually reaching Spain at Bilbao. Fortunately for him, he then finally worked out that the sea was getting a bit hot down there, and has headed back north - he's been back in British waters in the Isles of Scilly over the last few days.

Walruses historically occurred in the British Isles and other parts of northern Europe, but they were hunted out centuries ago - so Walrus are perfectly capable of surviving in the area.
