Does the Tierpark not have any apes? The only primates I see on the sign are the Japanese macaque and what looks like a tamarin.

Are the apes all over at the Berlin Zoo? Could be I just missed them on this sign, but tried to scan closely...

Thanks to you and zoogiraffe for your patience in answering all of these questions, but your photos are likely the only way I'll be visiting the zoos of Germany in the foreseeable future and you guys put together a really good photo-narrative.

According to Zootierliste Chimpanzee, Bonobo, Sumatran Orangutan, Bornean Orangutan, and Western Gorilla at Berlin Zoo. None at Berlin Tierpark.

This is correct, although we couldn't see the single Bornean (brilliantly named simply 'Kevin') on this visit.

As KC has found, there are no great apes at the Tierpark, but a good collection at the Zoo.

Tierpark has rather more primates than you've spotted - though many would be hard to find if you weren't familiar with the German names.

'Affenhaus' at top-left is an African-themed primate house, with Black Lemurs, Patas, Red-crowned Mangabeys, DeBrazza's and Diana Guenons and Geladas (Dscheladas).

There are lemurs in 'Vari-Wald' ('Ruffed Lemur Forest', also holding Red-bellied) and on the island marked 'Kattas' (Ring-tailed Lemurs) as well as in the African house.

There are three macaque exhibits - as well as the Japanese there are Barbary (Berberaffen, near the top) and Pig-tailed (Schweinsaffen, far right) - near the Pig-tailed are Buffy-headed Capuchins (not labelled on map).

There are also marmosets and tamarins (Krallenaffen) in the Pachyderm House and a Gibbon Island (towards the bottom left).

The primate collection doesn't match the ungulates or carnivores, but it's actually quite nice if you can live without the great apes!

@KC: Thanks for your detective work. Is Zooterliste the European ISIS equivalent?

@Maguari: Thanks for the run down of the primate collection. Next time you are in Berlin please give Kevin my regards if you see him!

European zoos use ISIS as well. Zootierliste ('Zoo Animal Lists') is different - it's a record of current and former holding put together by zoo nerds for zoo nerds! You can view the English version here:

ZootierlisteHomepage

It only covers Europe but within Europe has far better coverage than ISIS and is much more likely to point up odd subspecies or disputed IDs. It's usually more up-to-date than public ISIS records as well. It covers all mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and cartilaginous fishes, as well as bony fish over a certain size. Brilliant website.

Will do! :D
