That building has certainly seen better days. Unfortunate that it's falling apart like that but I guess it's necessary to make way for new areas? I'm not sure cause I've never been to Whipsnade.
@gentle lemur I remember going on a Fellows Architecture tour a few years ago at Whipsnade. Visiting this was one of the points of interest. It’s evidently degraded further since I saw it!
To echo others, it really is rotting from the inside. ZSL have stated it’s not fit to house animals anymore (thankfully!) and may be converted into an undercover picnic area in the future. Currently, it’s being used as a storage facility/dumpster.
Last estimates are a cost of £4m for a refurb. I only recall a touch-up paint job and weeding of the exterior in recent years.
