African savanna - BioParque do Rio

African savanna is the largest exhibit at the institution. It includes a river safari as well as elevated paths and underwater viewing for the hippo area. It is temporarily holding blackbuck, rusa deer, cassowary, ostrich, egyptian goose and aoudad; but the zoo plans to acquire giraffes and zebras.

Agree... I tend to think this is part of the handling area for the giraffes that will arrive. The other fences are probably for preventing the animals of getting too close to the boats.

BioParque do Rio's African Savanna is currently divided in four or five exhibits:
- I believe the first “exhibit” you are supposed to see is one on the island. It holds two black swans, a domestic greylag goose, domestic helmeted guinea fowl, blue and green peafowl, and demoiselle and gray crowned cranes.
- Next is the hippopotamus pool. There are two: Tim (arrived from Belo Horizonte in 1998), the male, and Bocão (born at RioZoo in 1994), the female. There are two separate main viewing spots (one is underwater and the other is supposed to be seen after passing through the walkway).
- Third on the way is the big mixed enclosure, which holds Javan Rusa, blackbuck, a female waterbuck named Silver and a male ostrich named Nil.
- The fourth one is the second enclosure on the island. It houses two ostriches, a male and a female.
- Last and least is the Barbary sheep enclosure, which saddens me a bit because it's all flat.
