The Victoria Esplanade Gardens are in Palmerston North (in the lower North Island), and are free to visit. There are fourteen aviaries here for exotic birds, mostly parrots and parakeets. The long roof at the left is a tropical conservatory (for plants, not birds), and behind there is Wildbase Recovery which houses and rehabilitates native NZ birds (the dark poles visible above the conservatory roof are supports for the Wildbase aviaries).
The inhabitants of these aviaries are Brown Teal, Greater Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Cockatiel, Rainbow Lorikeet, Budgie, Indian Ringneck, Peach-faced Lovebird, Bleeding Heart Pigeon, Canary, Zebra Finch, Java Sparrow, and Bengalese.
The permanent residents of the Wildbase aviaries are Blue Duck, Brown Teal, North Island Kaka, Red-crowned Kakariki, NZ Pigeon, NZ Bellbird, and Tuatara.
