historic bear grottoes

June 19-20, 2018
Wait, are the bears at San Diego still kept in these exhibits? I know the polars have a new enclosure, but what about the other species?

@Arizona Docent
Wow! I know we can't judge an institution for a few exhibits, and I'm sure San Diego is a great institution at all (one of the greatest in the world as we all know) but these bear exhibits definitely need to be demolished IMO.

@David Matos Mendes Like many older zoos, it is a mix of great and bad (like this). While I like the San Diego Zoo (I was a member until recently), it's not my favorite and I don't think (as many do) that it is the best zoo in the world. Many exhibits are too small, even brand new ones like the leopard exhibit in Africa Rocks, which is only big enough for something like caracal or serval IMO.

@Arizona Docent
Yes, I understand. I particularly don't know any older zoo that doesn't have one or two outdated exhibits at all... Despite never having visited SDZ, I have indeed seen some weak points from pictures and videos, like the jaguar and lion exhibits in EO, for example, although I understand the institution is indeed a serious organization that keeps many good structures and decent conservation programs.
