Discovered this specimen swimming in the water. After I took some photos of it I ofcourse saved it . Can anybody explain the strange English name for this species ?
I'd assume it's something to do with this species annoying horses back when horse-drawn carriages were common? Not sure though, interesting name for sure.
This species has been associated with the devil since the Middle Ages, and no one is quite sure why, possibly for its bite. There are several other common names that also reference the devil, including Devil's Footman and Devil's Steed. British folklore says that this beetle has eaten the core of Eve's apple and that crushing it forgives all sins.
