javelina herd

October 20, 2021, condominium in the Tucson Mountains
I love all your images of Javelinas...keep them coming! Does the herd have a very strong smell? I've often come across Javelinas/Peccaries in zoos and the stench can be overpowering at first.

@snowleopard The smell is not that strong. The sound is what I usually notice first (especially at night). When they are rooting around like this they make snorting pig sounds and also scrape the gravel. When it's dark I usually hear them before I see them. Occasionally two will get into a brief spat over food and they will make some rather chilling snarls. Thankfully they never direct it at me and if it appears they are not skittish - as this group was not - I can sit on the ground quietly and they will graze to within a few feet of me.

Followup: interestingly, the camera flash does not seem to bother them at all. Some of the wide angle closeups I am holding the camera on the ground about three feet in front of them. When the flash fires they have no reaction whatsoever and just keep grazing.

(For the photographers here, I have recently started using a Gary Fong flash diffuser).
