In some respects one of the most noteworthy taxa displayed at Tierpark Berlin, this species was first discovered in 1930 on the basis of fossil material; living populations were not discovered until the early 1970's. As such, this is a taxon which was believed long-since extinct when Tierpark Berlin first opened!
