@Jambo@Pertinax They don’t avoid the trees. They have platforms that are placed within the trees and these are one of their favourite places to climb up onto and rest.
@Zoofan15 One of my friends in Auckland talked to a keeper a few months ago and was told they tend to spend time on the ropes more, especially Charlie.
It’s good to know that they’ve installed platforms though. In my experience visiting Orangutans in zoos they spend about 80% of their time resting on platforms.
@Jambo Given the choice, Charlie would happily sit on the platform 80% of the day, but his day is inadvertently dictated by Melur. He’s besotted with her and wherever she goes, Charlie follows. On my last visit she had him up and down the towers and across the high ropes. It’s nice to see him active after so many years of seeing him huddled under a sack in the old exhibit.
